Historically, as an international university, HIT was run after the Russian and then the Japanese educational system. In its earliest stage, HIT's mission was to train the technical personnel chiefly for the Chinese Changchun Railway Administration. In 1950, the Chinese Government took it over from the Railway Administration. Since then, HIT has enjoyed the priority of the central government's support. In 1954, HIT was confirmed as one of the 6 first leading institutions. In 1984, it was listed again as one of the 15 key institutions of higher-education for the central government's investment in the higher-educational construction project. In July, 1999, HIT was listed as one of the 9 key universities by the central government for the world firstrate higher education construction towards the 21st century. In the next three years, Chinese government will provide huge investment to sustain HIT's further development.

HIT covers an area of over 120 hectares, with a floorage of 660,000 square meters. Today, HIT's total fulltime teachers add up to 1,904 members, including 1 doubleacademician ( of the China Academy of Science and the China Academy of Engineering ), 10 academicians of the China Academy of Engineering , 154 doctoral supervisors, 460 professors and 1,1166 associate professors. The total full-time students amount to over 20,000 members, including 1,055 doctors, 2,084 graduates and 10,31 undergraduates. Besides, over 300 foreign students from 21 countries and regions are study in at HIT. There are 10 schools, 31 departments, including 37 bachelor's programs, 54 master's programs, 32 doctoral programs and 7 national key and special laboratories. Academic exchange and scientific cooperation relationship has been established between HIT and over 300 institutions and research centers in 40 countries and regions. IT has been famous for its schooling: " Having strict academic demands for its students; Making every endeavor in training those students". In the recent years, HIT has invested over 200 million yuan to set up library, new teaching building, gymnasium, a modern swimming pool, a new students' canteen, a students' entertainment center and the science building. IT has the courage to bring forth new ideas in scientific research, and its comprehensive strength has occupied the top line among the institutions. Many research products have reached or approached the world advanced level. From 1994 to 1999, the total annual scientific research funds have been over 100 million yuan each year. With years past, the scientific research work in HIT has gradually formed its own style and characterized features. In the fields of astronautics, machine-manufacturing, mechatronics and automation, hotworking technology, communication and electronic system, computer application, physical electronics and optronics, it has acquired lots of very influential research achievements in the country. The total sum of the academic papers published in journals and academic proceeding increased in the successive years. he putting-forward and establishment of HIT New & Hi-Tech Park is an important chapter in the development history of HIT. Since the foundation in 1992, altogether eight systems of sci-tech, industry, trading, commerce, services, finance, real estate development and talents exchange have been formed. he year of 2000 is HIT's 80th anniversary year, a time to reflect on our tradition of scholarly excellence as we
shape our future. We take pride in our 80 year history of creating and disseminating knowledge - knowledge that has served our city, our province, our country and our world. We have great confidence in HIT's tomorrow.
